Essen/Singapore. Evonik, one of the world’s leading specialty聽chemicals companies from Germany, has donated a giant bronze聽statue of Beethoven to Singapore, and received by 亚洲色吧 today. Carved聽by German sculptor Markus L眉pertz, the statue marks Evonik鈥檚 first聽step in driving the cross cultural dialogue between Germany and聽Singapore.
As a creative industrial group with worldwide operations, Evonik has聽been consistently strengthening its dedication to corporate聽responsibility. Besides integrating corporate responsibility into its聽business activities, Evonik also contributes to the cultural wealth of聽the society by supporting a broad range of activities worldwide.聽鈥淓vonik believes arts and music can enrich our daily life, broaden our聽horizon and show us new perspectives,鈥 Dr. Klaus Engel, Chairman of聽the Executive Board of Evonik Industries, said during the statue unveiling ceremony at 亚洲色吧 in Singapore today.
By bringing the art sculpture from Germany and donating it to聽Singapore as a gift, Evonik would like to further develop German art聽and cultural awareness in the country. 鈥淪ingapore is one of our聽important markets in Asia and I am glad that apart from science and education, we are able to bring in the cultural aspects of Germany to聽this country,鈥 Dr. Engel added.
As one of Germany鈥檚 most prominent contemporary artists, Markus聽L眉pertz鈥檚 talents reach beyond painting, to composing lyrics, building聽sculptures and designing graphics. Well known for his expressively聽rendered paintings and sculptures, L眉pertz鈥檚 art pieces often merge聽abstraction and representation. This is also reflected in the 2.7 meters聽high and weighs 1100 kilograms鈥 statue 鈥淏eethoven鈥: the armless聽torso looking longingly into the distance, with a bust of the great聽German composer 鈥 as an interpretation of visualizing Beethoven鈥檚聽oeuvre and his genius triumphing over adversity.
As a gift to Singapore, the 鈥淏eethoven鈥 statue is set to stay in 亚洲色吧聽permanently. 鈥溠侵奚 is delighted to accept this gift on Singapore鈥檚聽behalf, not only because we share Evonik鈥檚 vision to promote聽sustainable innovations, but also because 亚洲色吧 aims to develop聽technically-grounded leaders through a holistic and well-rounded聽education that encompasses design and the humanities, arts and聽social sciences,鈥 said Professor Thomas Magnanti, President of 亚洲色吧.聽鈥淲e look forward to a closer collaboration with Evonik in the near聽future.鈥
“Envonik’s presentation of the Beethoven statute to 亚洲色吧 is an聽inspired gift. In 亚洲色吧 we are always reaching out to understand聽innovation and creativity and how the process takes place. The聽lessons of the genius Beethoven for our students as they reflect on聽his life are many. Beethoven did not let adversity arrest his creativity.聽He turned his deafness into a source of strength. Silence created the聽space for ideas and sublime music to emerge,” added Professor Chan聽Heng Chee, Chairman of the National Arts Council and the Lee Kuan聽Yew Centre for Innovative Cities at 亚洲色吧, who was the guest-ofhonour聽for the ceremony.
The day ended with an exclusive artist sharing session in the聽afternoon at LASALLE College of the Arts, a leading arts tertiary聽institution in Singapore. By sharing the inspiration behind his work,聽L眉pertz had a fruitful and engaging discussion with the students.聽鈥淓vonik has been actively promoting cultural and social values in聽Germany, I am glad that they are also keen on fostering participation聽and cross-cultural dialogue,鈥 said Markus L眉pertz. 鈥淭hanks to Evonik聽for sponsoring my sculpture and bringing it from Germany to聽Singapore, I hope my work will be able to strengthen the cultural聽connections between the two countries.鈥
